▶ Boron has several allotropes. Amorphous boron, also known as elemental boron or monomer boron, is a brown powder or gray lustrous crystal with relatively active chemical properties. It remains stable in air at room temperature. It begins to oxidize when heated to 300°C and ignites at 700°C. It burns with a red flame, while trace vaporized boron produces a green flame. It is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid, ethanol and diethyl ether. It dissolves in cold concentrated alkali solutions to release hydrogen gas and is oxidized to boric acid by concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid. At high temperatures, boron reacts with oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, halogens and carbon. It can also directly combine with most metals to form borides. It reacts with organic compounds to form either compounds with direct boron-carbon bonds or oxygen-containing compounds between boron and carbon.
▶ Monomer boron lies on the dividing line between metals and nonmetals in the periodic table. It is a predominantly non-metallic element with strong electronegativity, small atomic radius and concentrated nuclear charge, exhibiting non-metallic properties similar to silicon. Its density is 2.35 g/cm³, hardness 9.3, specific gravity 2.33–2.45, melting point 2300°C, boiling point 2550°C.
